How to Replace a Water Heater’s Thermocouple

Simply put ii is a piece of tubing that runs from the gas controller to the pilot. The end of the thermocouple and the pilot are held side by side in a bracket that is secured to the main burner. A new one is cheap and is easy to install:Turn off the gas supply.Undo the nuts that secure the device and the 2 gas tubes to the valve. The burner usually sits either loose or under some clips in the chamber and should slide free.Detach the thermocouple.The device is usually clipped to the pilot tube. The end of the thermocouple is inserted into the pilot assembly and can simply be pulled out.Install the new one the same way that you removed the old one:Reattach the end of the new device to the pilot assembly and then to the pilot gas supply using the clips that were removed earlier. Refit the burner and, using the correct size spanner or even wrench, reconnect the thermocouple cable and the gas tube to the burner, and finally the pilot gas tube to the valve. Check for gas leaks both by smell and also by using a soap and water mix to make a bubbly mixture around joints that will bubble if there is a problem.
