Replacing a section of this pipe is not as difficult as you think. Many suppliers will cut and thread a piece of pipe if a stock item is not available. Before you start the job, isolate the main water valve so that no water comes into your home. Next open a tap at the lowest point in the home in order to drain the system. You will need to cut away the section that you want to replace so the two pieces left can be unscrewed from the their fittings. The total length of the two replacement pieces of pipe and the union, when fully assembled, must be the same length as the damaged pipework. When you work out the length of material needed, go from the face of one fitting to the face of the opposite and add on an inch. This accounts for 1/2 inch of threads at either end, which overlap into the fittings. Dalston Plumbers cut and refit pipes.Take out the pipework, using two wrenches, to grip the pipe and the fitting respectively, and then turn in opposite directions. Clean the area carefully in preparation for the new connection. A wire brush is perfect for this task.Apply a pipework jointing material to the threads on the pipe ends and threads in the fittings, pressing into the threads with the tip of a finger.Place the ring nut over a section of the pipe.Note: A union is a fitting that is constructed from 3 parts, 2 union nuts and 1 ring nut. The 2 union nuts connect to the pieces of pipe at their join. With a ring nut joining the two parts. Screw both sections of pipe into their respective fittings.Tighten both sections of pipe and then the ring nut. Just as with the removal process, using two pipe wrenches makes reassembly easier and safer. A Dalston Plumber carries various wrenches. After the section is replaced, complete the process by turning the main water supply on and checking for leaks.
