Difference between Heat and Temperature. The difference between heat and temperature is heat is a unit of energy, and measured in joules (J). Dalston Plumbers use thermometers.Temperature is the degree of hotness of a substance.Heat is the heat energy (J) that is in a substance.Measuring Temperature.Celcius (or centigrade) is the unit most frequently used and is written as C. Temperature is recorded with thermometers. There are several types, but the most common rely on the expansion of a liquid or a bi-metallic strip. The two liquids used in thermometers are usually alcohol and mercury. Bi-metallic strips work on the principle of thermal expansion and contraction. Bi-metallic strips are frequently used in thermostats, as they will bend when a particular temperature is reached. This is used to break an electrical circuit and turn off the heating.Simple Thermometer.A simple thermometer is a glass tube with a substance inside such as alcohol or mercury that expands or contracts at a constant rate in response to temperature changes. There is a metal bulb fitted at one end of the thermometer for taking the temperature or immersing in water. This thermometer is used for checking the water temperature at taps or outlets. A Dalston Plumber carries a thermometer.Clip-on Thermometer. The clip-on, clamp-on thermometer is used for measuring surface temperatures of pipework. The thermometer is bi-metallic strip type in its operation. This type of thermometer is normally used when commissioning central heating systems when two clip-on thermometers are needed to measure the temperature of both the flow and return pipework in order to get the correct water flow through each.Differential Digital Thermometer. This thermometer has a range of attachments that can be used to measure simple water temperatures by immersing a probe in the water, or connecting a device known as a thermistor to the surface of a pipe. If commissioning a central heating system two thermistors are strapped to the flow and return pipework and the digital thermometer will measure the temperature and difference in temperature of each pipe.
